Sceptered Isle Blog ~ Friday 2/15
After an overnight flight from Boston, we touched down at Heathrow Airport in London early Friday morning. We were greeted by Prince Harry (our WorldStrides tour guide Simon Wilkinson in a mask, he has a fun sense of humor!)
Our first hotel, the Millenium at Copthorne is next to the Stamford Bridge Stadium, home of the Chelsea Football Club which holds over 41,000 people. In the middle of a city! After a quick stop to the hotel, our afternoon was filled with instructions on navigating the “Tube” followed by a picnic lunch in St. James Park. We walked through the park to the gates of Buckingham Palace, then to the Thames river and the Houses of Parliament and a scaffold covered Big Ben, presently under repairs. We got a glimpse of the London Eye, a giant ferris wheel built to celebrate the millennium. More walking over to Westminster Abbey then a Tube ride to the Victoria and Albert Museum. All this moving around made for some exhausted students and chaperones! A stop in Kensington ended the long day with a traditional English dinner of “bangers and mash” (sausage and mashed potatoes).
Tomorrow we have a guided bus tour of London and a trip to the British Museum, lots more walking but hopefully we will sleep off the jet lag and be ready for a lovely day ~ did I mention it was 56 sunny degrees today and the weather tomorrow will be similar?
