Notre Dame High School
Summer Reading for 2017
Dear Student and Parent/Guardian,
We are pleased to announce This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men & Women by Jay Allison & Dan Gediman has been selected for the NDA 14th annual high school summer reading program. Students, faculty, and staff read the book over the summer and then discuss this book at the start of the school year. This book is available in hardcover, paperback, or on Kindle. You can buy the book here.
This book was chosen by the Mission Effectiveness Committee for this year’s Summer Reading Program because its content closely relates to our chosen Hallmark theme for the 2017-2018 academic year, Hallmark #7: “We develop holistic learning communities which educate for life.” It educates for life through the wisdom passed down through the authors of these essays, teaching life lessons that are just important as the academic ones students learn throughout the year in school.
Students need only read the assigned essays from the book, which are laid out in the discussion question handout. The discussion questions for the reading assignment must be completed by each student for the book discussion on August 31, 2017 and will be graded and included in the student’s first term English grade. Click here to download the discussion questions.
As part of the program this summer, we will be holding a “This I Believe” Essay contest. Each student will be writing their own “This I Believe” essay as part of the summer reading assignment, and are invited to submit their essay into the contest. Essays can be submitted through this link: https://tinyurl.com/ndaessaycontest. Submissions are due on August 21, 2017. A winner will be chosen from each grade level. Winners will be announced and will receive their prize during the Summer Reading Day on Thursday, August 31st.
We thank you in advance for your participation in our summer reading program. Should you have any questions you may email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Wishing you a blessed and safe summer,
The Mission Effectiveness Committee
