Writing and Research

Like learning a musical instrument or a sport, conducting research requires patience, practice, time, and effort.  The skills that you develop will not only help you in your class, but also at your job and personal life.

  • Your notes taken in class on the index cards will help you get off on a good start with your research paper.
  • You are now ready to begin your research process by writing a thesis statement and creating a list of all possible sources that you might use in your paper.
  • Taking lots of notes, listing your sources, and brainstorming a rough draft is the best way to get over any slump of procrastination on this project.

  • Read your research handbook to guide you through these two processes.  Don't assume that you already know how to do it.  Many published handbooks on research are written for a purpose: to properly show you the steps of writing a research paper. I'm available to answer questions and clarify these steps as you begin your process.  The most important phase right now is to clearly write your topic (thesis statement) and find your sources.
