Welcome to the Academy
Welcome to the Academy of Notre Dame, a private, Catholic, co-educational Pre-K through 8th grade Lower School and a college-preparatory Upper School for young women. Founded in 1854 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur at St. Patrick’s in Lowell, the Academy has been at its current location in Tyngsboro since 1927. See History for more information.
Situated along the Merrimack River, the Academy's 200-acre campus offers pristine fields, ponds, and forests in which to explore, learn and play. The natural environment provides seclusion and security unique to our location while also being in close proximity to local emergency services.
Visitors entering through the Academy's front door will be greeted by a statue and paintings of our foundress, St. Julie Billiart, reminding all who enter that “the Good God” celebrates each unique individual at the Academy. In the early part of 19th century, St. Julie rang her bell through the streets of Napoleonic France to welcome in poor children to receive an education. We still hear echoes of that bell, which calls to order gatherings, summons the end of lunch, and guides young children to recess.
Like St. Julie and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SNDdeN), all members of the Academy family resoundingly support our mission: to educate the whole person for life through a curriculum rooted in spiritual formation and academic excellence. We nurture a belief in the goodness of God and the dignity of each person. We are committed to community-building, diversity, global justice and service to those in need. This mission is reflected in the energetic learning environment, in the interactions throughout the Academy, and through the generous outreach of the Academy’s community service efforts.
